Edmonton Journal - Telescope
Steve Dawson's Telescope is the funky, jazzy counterpart to Waiting For The Lights To Come Up, the first of two albums recorded simultaneously. The Vancouver folk guru left all the experimental alt-country jazz jingles for this spontaneous, mash-up of a record. He's got enough soul in his pedal steel to reincarnate any lifeless listener (as heard on Caballero's Dream), and a whole lot of moody blues to get your emotions up and running (see the twangy number titled Nailbiter). Sure, Telescope is a record that's built around instrumental jam sessions rather than vocals, but it's still a pity not to hear him sing. It's just not the same without his voice.
