Stealing the show with a pedal steel guitar – who would’ve thunk?
After Vancouver musician/producer/songwriter Steve Dawson spent years making records with highly acclaimed musicians, he gathered the best of them to team up for the release of his instrumental CD, Telescope - the second in its series - to accompany the pedal steel guitar and showcase the instrument’s familiar country sound in a new way.
There’s no question the calibre of musicians on this record is impressive. They effortlessly support one another with elegant compositions of horns, guitar, keys, bass and harmonica, offering tasteful grooves and melodies around the pedal steel guitar, without allowing it to monopolize the songs.
Musicians and pedal steel guitar lovers alike are sure to listen to this CD many times over, but if you don’t fall into either category, then Telescope may not be for you. As much as one can appreciate the musicianship that contributed to the making of this CD, it still may not win over the average listener.
But don’t disregard it completely and let’s give credit where credit is due. Dawson delivers a spirited mosaic of jazz, pop and improvisation, and most importantly, a refreshing new twist to the show-stealing instrument that deserves a listen.
