Review:
The cover shot of an urban church exterior signals an album of spiritual bent. Rousing opener “Didn’t It Rain” confirms that. Justin Rutledge’s “Lay Me Down Sweet Jesus,” Thomas Dorsey’s “Today,” Skip James’ “Be Ready When He Comes,” David Wall’s “Fortify Me” and two Byrnes originals extend the theme. “The Death of Ernesto Guevera” by Byrnes and producer/label-mate Steve Dawson is deep and spooky, Jim’s take care of “Stardust” a dreamy by-road. Dawson’s production is lean and gritty. His guitars help elevate the album. Very fine work.
