Hockey, like any team sport, is all about interplay and co-operation, and the same goes for Banjo Hockey. The product of Toronto guitarist Tim Posgate's fascination with the banjo, the Hornband features trumpeter Lina Allemano, Quinsin Nachoff on tenor sax and clarinet, and the redoubtable Howard Johnson on tuba and baritone saxophone. As the instrumentation suggests, it's not your typical jazz combo; instead of a rhythm section, Posgate lets the writing set the pulse. But it's the way the band play off one another that animates the music, from the New Orleans raunch of Big Top Blues to the sprightly Appalachian lines of Moosamin Eh.
