MIDWEST RECORD

Review:

Hokum hasn’t had it this good in years. First was the well intentioned old hippie tribute to Yank Rachell. Then was Maria Muldaur’s trip back to the Even Dozen and early Kweskin days with an appropriate bunch of old hippies. Now comes a bunch of old and new hippies, backed by real rockers, tipping the cap to the Mississippi Sheiks in what is simply a jaw dropping, 4 ‘goddamn’! performance that kicks it off in high gear and never lets up. Perhaps the Sheiks are best known now for “Sitting on Top of the World;” this set takes you deeper with one passionate performance after another, audiophonically and sonically geared to today’s ears without losing any of the authentic spirit. While you can lump this into Americana without really giving it justice or due, it’s a wonderful side trip all its own made by players who really dig being part of it. A winner throughout.
