Seminal blues group the Mississippi Sheiks is feted in this tribute album with new recordings by John Hammond, Bruce Cockburn, Bill Frisell, Geoff Muldaur, Jim Byrnes, the North Mississippi Allstars and others. There's an earthy, down-home feel to it - gutbucket, not glitz. For those who aren't up on the Sheiks, it was a string band from the early 1930s that recorded nearly 100 singles, toured extensively, and once played by invitation for President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
One of it's singles, 'Sitting on top of the World', has been covered by Ray Charles, the Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins, Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Van Morrison, Jack White, and Bob Dylan. The song also was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
