You really don't expect authentic gospel music to come out of Vancouver—kind of like you don't expect the Winter Olympic Games to be held in a city without snow. But then, what's life without a few surprises? It all began when Canadian blues icon Jim Byrnes approached Marcus Mosely and a few friends to lay down backing vocals for an album he was working on. Byrnes began calling the trio of southern imports "The Sojourners" and the rest is history. Their second, self-titled album borrows from a variety of styles—blues, R&B and country—to create a heartfelt and sincere sound. The best track on the album is an inspired cover of Los Lobos' "The Neighborhood" with its simple refrain "Please bring peace to the neighborhood." Or, at least some snow.
