Even Jenny Lewis isn't this Jenny Lewis. You'll turn on Don't Hurry For Heaven!, the newest release from Devon Sproule, and you'll swear it's an old Rilo Kiley demo, re-released in a flowery new package.
But it's not, and Sproule isn't an imposter (for some reason, the indie market is full of basically nothing but Lewis imposters – even the talented and beautiful Zooey Deschanel is trying too hard to be just like everyone's favorite indie role model). Sproule sounds like Lewis, but it's pure coincidence – her voice is her own, and it's lovely.
She's also incredibly well-spoken and intelligent. Her lyrics are wise and interesting. “Take a book, for instance/when it's done, you are let down/but when it's smacking in your head/you go attacking for the end” she sings on “Healthy Parents, Happy Couple”. And on “Don't Hurry For Heaven”, she says, “And if it's forever, then you've got/forever to get there/don't hurry for heaven while I'm/taking care of you here”.
Sproule grew up on a hippie commune and has spent her entire life making conversation. It shows – in the best way possible. She has a beautiful voice and beautiful things to say. If you're expecting Jenny Lewis, you're going to be far more pleased than you could possibly be hoping to be.
