Their first, 2007's Hold On, was a powerful, effusive gospel recording that should by rights have got this Vancouver based trio - Will Sanders, Ron Small and Marcus Mosely from Louisiana, Chicago and Texas respectively - noticed. Introducing the three pals, who started out singing in church some 50 years previously, the record ebbed with the seraphic harmonies of The Soul Stirrers and The Mighty Clouds Of Joy and flowed with the fervour of Solomon Burke. Their eponymous second drinks from the same righteous river. Backed with the organic stabs and swells of Mike Kalanj's Hammond B3, and the bluesy guitar a la Pops Staples of producer Steve Dawson, The Sojourners move with feverish readings of Brother Moses Smote the Water and Great Day and meditative takes on The Violinaires' Another Soldier Gone and Reverend Gary Davis' Death Don't Have No Mercy.
