Hittin' The Note
The Tribute Concert to the music of The Mississippi Sheiks, now on DVD, captures some of today's most gifted players summoning up the sounds and spirit of the 1930's South. A recital by blues-folkster Jim Byrnes recounts the history of the honorees, getting the program off to an enchanting start. Guitarist Steve Dawson brought it all together, a roots and blues specialist with the intricate pitch of Sonny Landreth and the sleekness of Warren Haynes. The kindhearted voices of The Sojourners are mesmerizing, and singer Oh Susanna captivates. Watch as the legendary Van Dyke Parks rolls back the decades on his piano. Bob Brozman, another of the awe-inspiring string-benders on hand, leads the grand finale that has everyone, including Dave Alvin, John Hammond and Alvin Youngblood Hart lighting up the Sheiks' "Sittin' On Top of the World." Pioneers and their still shining antique music get the royal treatment.
