NEW newsletter from Kelly Joe Phelps
Hello again, friends-
I’m pleased to remind some and tell others that the Ulnar nerve problem that hit me back in January is all taken care of, and I’m on the eve of heading once again out on the road. I’m due first over in Ireland for a Roots and Blues festival (Sep. 6-8), then over to Scotland (Sep. 10) to start a 3 week tour through Scotland, Wales, and England. I’m really looking forward to these dates, too. It’s been a few years since I’ve toured solo over there, so it’ll be great to see all you folks across the Atlantic. This tour also gives me a chance to make up some of the dates I unfortunately had to cancel back in January and February, and I’m happy to do so.
I’ll be back home in time to accept my induction into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame on October 5th. That’ll be a proud day for me. One of the main criteria for being nominated is having given 20 years of service to the music industry. It’s still amazing to me to think that that much time has gone by since I started this solo career back in 1992, sitting in cafe-corners playing for tips and free meals. My first CD, Lead Me On, was released in 1994, so I’m only one year from that 20- year landmark as well. Crazy. “Where does the time go,” you hear the old folks say. Well, I’m apparently well on my way to becoming one of those very people! Where does the time go, indeed.
I’ll be playing shows in California and southern Oregon the last two weeks of October, including two of my favorite rooms – ‘The Freight And Salvage’ in Berkeley, and ‘McCabes’ in Santa Monica. McCabe’s will always be a special place for me. That’s where I played my very first gig on what has become this near twenty year, international touring career. It’s also the place where I both met and performed with Townes Van Zandt. 1996, maybe? We played two shows together that night, and I’ll remember that wonderful experience the rest of my life. He was incredibly gracious to me.
Come November I’m headed back down to Australia for a couple of weeks, in what is their season-turn into Summer. Always an immediate shock to the system leaving my Pacific Northwest home at that time of year to jump straight into someone else’s barbecue season! A beautiful country filled with wonderful people. I’m glad to be getting back there this year. It looks like I’ll be going straight over to New Zealand after that for the last two weeks of the month, playing a series of shows. The details are still getting firmed up on that, so if you live down there, or fancy a visit, keep your eyes on the tour schedule. I ought to have those dates up soon.
There’s a new, extensive KJP interview on the No Depression website that you’ll enjoy reading;
It describes at length and in detail the creative, spiritual, and personal process that led to the recording of Brother Sinner & The Whale, and what has transpired for me and it since the release.
Thanks again for the support and patience during the time it’s taken to get my arm back to square. I look forward to seeing you all, sharing the glorious experience of music together, and continuing to paint this world of ours with all the colours of us.
Peace and Blessings all, Kelly Joe Phelps
