Black Hen Music Booking

Black Hen On The Road

Booking for 2019 Festivals

Thank you for visiting our new booking wing of the label. Here at Black Hen we've been releasing albums in the folk, blues, jazz and roots vein for over 2 decades, but this year we'll be expanding the label to also take care of festival bookings for a select few on the label. A number of our artists have been representing themselves or have recently broken from a longer-term agency, and they have been bugging us for years to do this. While we don’t pretend to be a full-on agency, we’ve been involved in booking shows in one way or another for the last 25 years, so what the heck… we decided it was time to get in there and help out. We are so proud of the music we create with these artists and are hoping to work with the festival community on a process of booking that is simple and direct for both Artistic Directors and the performers. Steve and Alice Dawson have been running Black Hen since 1998, and many of you know us from our work in the industry. Hopefully we can work together to bring some cool music to your festival next year!

Keep in mind that some of these artists can also share bands, and with all of them under one umbrella, we hope to make those possibilities easy to discuss as well. The following is the list of artists we are representing for booking in festival season 2019. Click on the name of an artist you'd like to get more info on, or scroll through the page to peruse them all:

  • Jim Byrnes (Award winning Canadian blues/soul singer and skilled raconteur)

  • Kat Danser (Blues singer/guitarist releasing her brand new album this fall)

  • Steve Dawson (Guitarist/songwriter, musical adventurer/enabler)

  • Big Dave McLean (Winnipeg’s favourite son, and widely acclaimed blues artist)

  • David Olney (Legendary Nashville songwriter, running-mate of Townes Van Zandt, and has a brand new album)

  • Matt Patershuk (up-and-coming Alberta songwriter with an incredible voice and lyrical depth)

  • The Eisenhauers (Stellar folk duo from BC - if you haven’t heard them yet, you need to!)

  • Jenny Whiteley (Folk/Roots artist from Ontario and member of the esteemed Whiteley entourage)

If you'd like to discuss booking any of our artists, contact:

Jim Byrnes

Jim Byrnes

Jim Byrnes

Jim Byrnes

Jim Byrnes was born in St. Louis, Missouri – that’s blues country. He grew up on the city’s north side. One of the neighbourhood bars had Ike and Tina Turner as the house band, and as a kid he attended a birthday party that Albert King performed at. As a teenager going to music clubs, Jim was steeped in the traditions of the blues.

By age thirteen, Jim was singing and playing blues guitar. His first professional gig was in 1964, opening for The Byrds. Over the years, he has had the great good fortune to appear with a virtual who’s who of the blues. From Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal, Ray Charles, Dr. John and Robert Cray, Jim has been on the blues highway for 45 years.

Jim has proven that a serious car accident in 1972, in which he lost both of his legs, has done anything but hinder him. Despite two swipes with death and some pretty hard knocks, Byrnes has still managed to rack up an enviable string of award-winning albums, not to mention his long list of film and TV credits.

Byrnes has released 7 outstanding albums in 15 years since he hooked up with Steve Dawson, one of North America’s most critically acclaimed roots music producers. Ranging from gut-wrenching soul to straight-up blues, gospel and even an acclaimed country album, Jim’s recorded output has been adventurous and wide-ranging.

At age 70, Jim Byrnes just gets better with age and this year he has recorded a career milestone, which, given his history with numerous Juno Awards and Maple Blues Awards, among many other accolades, is saying a lot. But, if you listen just once through ‘Long Hot Summer Days’, it’s easy to be convinced that there simply isn’t anyone in Canada with a more powerful voice than Jim Byrnes.

Recent Awards:

  • 3-Time Juno Award Winner

  • 5-Time Maple Blues Award Winner

  • Multiple Western Canadian Music Award Winner

RECENT QUOTES:

"If it's the blues that you love, the blues tinged with a smoky New Orleans night and a little Americana thrown in for good measure, then Long Hot Summer Days may well be the album to get you through the long, dark nights of the winter to come." - Maverick UK

"This CD is a fine example of musical taste and talent and aged 69, Jim Byrnes proves that youth doesn’t have it all its own way. Hugely satisfying." - Blues Matters Magazine

"Five decades in the blues business, Jim Byrnes still sounds all fired up. If anything, his recorded output just keeps on improving as he and producer Steve Dawson find more ways to give this talented singer/guitarist a forum for his deeply soulful vocals." - Vancouver Sun

"His ‘warm & weathered’ singing style has been recognized with many awards, including several Maple Blues Awards and the key really is his voice, it allows him to make almost any song his own. Do whatever it takes to add this to your collection" - Toronto Blues Society

Kat Danser

Kat Danser

Kat Danser

Kat Danser

Kat Danser’s music is a steel belted radial easily flexing between a dusty gravel road and a fresh coat of asphalt. True to her Polish-Gypsy heritage, Danser is in perpetual motion and her swampy roots and blues style is a fine-tuned reflection of life lessons from the road. Edmonton's Kat Danser doesn't just play the blues - she studies it, lives it, breathes it - from sweaty, smoky beer joints to elegant, centre stage in the finest of concert halls. Her sweet vocals and instrumental prowess beautifully combine with her sharp wit and commanding stage presence to deliver unfailingly memorable live performances.

Her fifth album, "Goin' Gone", was produced by Steve Dawson.

This recording celebrates her passion for the roots of blues music and her achievements as a graduate student at the University of Alberta where she has now officially become Dr. Kat Danser with a PhD in Music.

RECENT AWARDS:

  • 3-Time Western Canadian Music Award Nominee

Steve Dawson

Steve Dawson

Steve Dawson

Steve Dawson

Over the past two decades, Vancouver-born guitarist Steve Dawson has become such an indelible fixture on the Canadian musical landscape that it’s tempting to take him for granted. The music that flows out of him is so natural and authentic that it’s possible to forget all of the toil that went into producing it.

Behind the seemingly endless stream of award winning musical output (he has produced and/or played on more than 100 albums since the turn of the millennium - 20 of which have been nominated for Juno Awards, and 7 have won Junos), is one of the hardest working musicians this country has ever produced. Whether he’s turning heads on the concert circuit with his incendiary playing, or pulling the best possible performances out of the many artists that he works with, Dawson is always striving to take things to the next level.

Steve's latest, and brand new album “Lucky Hand” explores the “American Primitive” style of fingerstyle and slide guitar popularized by John Fahey and Leo Kottke and teams Steve up with his old partner Jesse Zubot, who contributes mesmerizing string quartet arrangements on half the album, while the rest of the pieces are solo performances or duets with Charlie McCoy and John Resichman.

Steve’s multi-faceted career has brought him to countless international festivals, working on the stage and in the studio with an extensive cast of musicians, including John Hammond, David Gidalgo, Van Dyke Parks, Sonny Landreth, Colin James, Jim Byrnes, Matt Andersen, Jill Barber, Dave Alvin, Tim O’Brien, Fats Kaplin, The McCrary Sisters, Bob Brozman, Long John Baldry, Bruce Cockburn, Kelly Joe Phelps, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Geoff Muldaur, The Deep Dark Woods, and many others.

Steve currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee, where he works as a solo artist, sideman, and record producer. He runs the acclaimed independent label Black Hen Music and his recording studio, The Henhouse. Steve also releases a podcast exploring the lives and careers of interesting musicians entitled “Music Makers and Soul Shakers”.

RECENT AWARDS:

  • 3-Time Juno Award Winner as an artist, 4 more as producer

  • Maple Blues Award Winner (guitarist of the year)

  • Multiple Western Canadian Music Award Winner

  • Multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards

RECENT QUOTES:

“It is inspiring to hear modern instrumental music for guitar that is articulated within true song form. Steve Dawson’s new album conjures the ghost of John Fahey for me – not in imitation, but by way of joining a tradition and then extending its range. I find this song cycle to be intelligent and challenging; joyful and deeply romantic; both earthy and untethered. It is affirming – and music to which I shall soon be returning.” - Joe Henry

"Steve Dawson’s Lucky Hand is a beautiful, genre-stretching collection of guitar instrumentals — moods from joyful to poignant, expressed through some of the coolest fingerpicking you’re likely to hear. The sweet slide playing is framed intermittently, and effectively, by the presence of imaginatively constructed string arrangements and some tasty harmonica. Check it out!" - Bruce Cockburn

“Playing a range of guitars – acoustic, 12-string, national tricone, weissenborn, ukulele – the depth of Dawson’s talent lies in the fact that the melodic progressions are seamless and give the impression of total fluidity and graceful ease." - Lonesome Highway

“The sounds and textures he creates are magnificent. The record as a whole is cohesive, centered, and downright beautiful.” - No Depression

"A true jaw dropper throughout, this set is no one trick pony and will blow your ears open time and again every step of the way.” - Midwest Record

Big Dave McLean

Big Dave McLean

Big Dave McLean

Big Dave McLean

Ever since getting his start with an impromptu guitar lesson from John Hammond at the 1969 Mariposa Folk Festival, this Yorkton-born, Winnipeg-based artist has been devoted to his craft, touring relentlessly through Canada’s blues bars, folk clubs and folk and blues festivals.

Along the way, there have been career highs: opening for his idol, Muddy Waters; earning two WCMAs, a Prairie Music Award, a Whisky Award and countless Maple Blues honours – including the Blues with Feeling (lifetime achievement) Award; sharing a JUNO for his contribution to CBC’s Saturday Night Blues Vol. 1 album; and, most recently, garnering his fourth career JUNO nod for his last album, "Better The Devil You Know".

From gospel-tinged blues numbers to tributes to dearly departed loved ones, the songs on this album betray Dave’s roots as the son of a Presbyterian minister – while also giving the Devil his due, figuratively speaking.

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings’ rhythm section of John Dymond and Gary Craig bring their kick-ass roots-rock sensibilities to the mix. Legendary Nashville string player Fats Kaplin (Mark Knopfler, Waylon Jennings, the Mavericks, Nanci Griffith) plays heartfelt mandolin and fiddle. And Ann and Regina McCrary’s soulful backing vocals help contribute to the gospel feel of “Deliver Me” and “You’re Gonna Need Somebody on Your Bond.”

With "Better the Devil you Know", Dave continues to set an example for new generations of musicians by constantly evolving his sound, embracing new artistic collaborations and making records that just keep getting better and better.

Recent Quotes:

“This latest release should make U.S. blues fans sit up and take notice to his powerful voice, songwriting skills and prowess with a National steel guitar.” – Virginia Pilot Daily

"With his whisky soaked voice tearing it up even further, every note sounds as authentic as it gets." - Midwest Record

"The interplay of these musicians is seamless and natural—perfect accompaniment for McLean’s often rough, but authentic delivery. This is no nonsense, no pretension blues, served up right." - Elmore Magazine

"His rough-hewn guitar style and lowdown harmonica make him a true force of nature on the blues scene today." - Blues In Britain

David Olney

"Americana Pioneer” singer-songwriter, stream-caster and actor David Olney is well known worldwide for his indelible songs and powerful performances. Recorded by Emmylou Harris, Del McCoury, Linda Ronstadt, Steve Young, Slaid Cleaves, The Wailin’ Jennys & many others, David shares his songs and the story behind them in his weekly “You Never Know” Songwriter Series videos. His new “This Side Or The Other” full-length recording on Black Hen Music was co-produced by Juno award-winning producer/multi-instrumentalist Steve Dawson. The frequent reference to walls and borders in the songs on this new album – walls being built and tumbling down – are bound with a never-ending thread of hope, logic, and patience found in David Olney’s extensive body of work.

RECENT QUOTES:

(OK, this one isn’t recent, but it’s too cool to not include)…

"Anytime anyone asks me who my favorite music writers are, I say Mozart, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bob Dylan, and Dave Olney. Dave Olney is one of the best songwriters I've ever heard – and that's true. I mean that from my heart." - Townes Van Zandt

"If you like your musical heroes to rock out like the jackhammer of a rockabilly saint but also deliver song sonnets from a contemplative place, then David Olney is your man.” - Acoustic Live! Magazine

Matt Patershuk

Matt Patershuk

Matt Patershuk

Matt Patershuk

‘Same As I Ever Have Been’ is Patershuk’s most organic and confident collection of songs yet. With veteran roots musician Steve Dawson returning to produce and contribute some tasteful string work, it’s easy to hear how much Matt has grown as a performer since his last record, ‘I Was So Fond Of You’ came out in early 2016. This time around, Patershuk and Dawson met in Vancouver at Bryan Adams’ acoustically perfect Warehouse Studio to hunker down for a few days and record an albums’ worth of new roots gems. Like all of Dawson’s productions, Matt’s new songs were recorded with all of the musicians playing together in the same room. This created an intimate vibe that allowed the musicians to play off of one another to create some truly magical and unanticipated moments. For Patershuk, it was

a thrilling experience. “It was a much bigger band than I had ever recorded with. Some of the songs were louder and rougher than anything I’d done on my past albums, but I jumped right in without fear, hit the ground running and played with all the energy I could muster.” Patershuk and Dawson decided to enlist the skills
of legendary drummer Jay Bellerose (a frequent collaborator of T-Bone Burnett and Joe Henry), and with the help of regular Dawson collaborators such as John Reischman (mandolin), Ana Egge (vocals), Chris Gestrin (keyboards), and Jeremy Holmes (bass), the sessions were creative and spontaneous, with only a few judi- cious overdubs added after the fact. Every song on ‘Same As I Ever Have Been’resonates with a warm roadhouse, barn dance feel that can’t be faked.

RECENT QUOTES:

“Think Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kristofferson and John Prine territory. A real find.” - Maverick UK

"Same As I Ever Have Been is a soulful country album with warmly thoughtful and slightly off-kilter insights into life, love, heartbreak, death and all that good twangy stuff." - Planet S

The Eisenhauers

The Eisenhauers

The Eisenhauers

The Eisenhauers

‘The Road We Once Knew’ is the debut album from The Eisenhauers, the husband and wife duo of roots music veterans, Jeremy Eisenhauer and Sheree Plett Eisenhauer. Produced by the Canadian folk music icon, Steve Dawson, ‘The Road We Once Knew’ features a riveting selection of songs that are simple, spare and heartbreaking in their directness.

Prior to beginning work on ‘The Road We Once Knew,’ The Eisenhauers decided to pull up stakes and move from the busy metropolis of Vancouver to the wilderness of Kaslo in the East Kootenays. Not surprisingly many of the songs on the record explore the dynamics of escaping from the city and moving to the country. Isolation brought unexpected rewards as the transplanted couple’s seclusion allowed them to write music together for the first time. Though both Jeremy and Sheree have had productive solo careers and have released eight albums under their own names between them, ‘The Road We Once Knew’ is the first record to be put out under their shared family name.

The Eisenhauers wanted to make an album with no other goal than to capture the essence of their sound in as pure and unaffected a way as possible. Once they’d worked through their songs as a duo, they flew to Nashville where Steve Dawson brought their songs to life in a fully live off the floor recording session that lasted five days. With Dawson’s keen ear for sparse sonics and atmosphere, the record became a fourteen song showcase of authentic expression, rather a sanitary display of technical perfection.

Not surprisingly, many of the songs on ‘The Road We Once Knew’ reflect on how life changes with age and experience. Tracks like ‘Don’t Lose Me’ and ‘Moving to the High Country’ are the perfect soundtrack for people trying to live authentic lives. Beautifully played, sung and executed, ‘The Road We Once Knew’ is a testament to the healing power of music and the value of wisdom gained from experience. Every word and note of it rings true.

Recent Quotes:

"The Eisenhauers' new album is chockful of exquisite melodies and simple, stripped-down acoustic folk/bluegrass that highlight the dynamic vocal interplay between Sheree and Jeremy." - Penguin Eggs

"The heavenly vocals, the simple, heartrending string arrangements, the gentle harmonies and the duo’s overall maturity of sound will endear them to all who love sweet, earthy acoustic roots." - Revelstoke Mountaineer

"She’s vocally centered. He starts with the music. Together, they create a sweet, earthy, mature roots sound." - Planet S

Jenny Whiteley

Jenny Whiteley

From bluegrass to old time, from folk to jug band music, Jenny Whiteley has been immersed in the tradition of acoustic music her whole life.  Her most recent album is dedicated to her dad, Chris Whiteley, and the musical influence he continues to have on her.  The whole recording rings out with strains of banjo, fiddle, harmonica and guitar, but also features such un-sung instruments as jaw harp, mouth trumpet, bones and even the jug!

The resulting live show is an extravaganza of quirky sounds and solid songs, echoes of the long-gone dust bowl, and shadows of the delta blues, all strung together with the pearls of Jenny’s original songs.  And let’s not forget the joy - Jenny’s famous sense of humour is often featured during her shows, in the engaging stories of musical friends, encounters with Folk music legends, and daily life that leave audiences giggling and tapping their toes at the same time.

Jenny attended her first Juno Awards as a nominee at the age of 15 in 1986 as a member of her family band, The Junior Jug Band.  Many years later, in 1998, after in striking out on their own for the first time, Jenny and her brother Dan were nominated for a Juno for their Bluegrass record Heartbreak Hill.  It was during this period of her career that Jenny honed her on-stage chops and personality as she lead Toronto’s seminal weekly  High Lonesome Wednesday at The Silver Dollar for many years.

Whiteley has performed at  most of Canada’s premier folk festivals throughout her career, including Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Mariposa, Stan Rogers and Lunenberg.

RECENT QUOTES:

“Think Cash, Waylon Jennings, "Her version of “Groundhog” ranks right up there with classic recordings by Doc Watson, Frank Proffitt, and Pete Seeger." - Rootsworld

"The album is like a musical memoir, a mix of both originals and songs that pay homage to Jenny’s heritage from folk, blues, bluegrass and jug band to old time and early jazz." - Elmore Magazine

"This is a diverse and enjoyable collection of roots music that is sure to show up on some best-of lists, and perhaps could garner the two-time Juno winner another nod for folk/roots recording of the year." - Penguin Eggs
