Veteran Canadian blues singer Jim Byrnes proves his versatility with a motley program of first-rate material, ranging from the Band’s “The Shape I’m In” and Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows” to soul staples like Wilson Pickett’s “Ninety Nine and a Half (Wont’ Do)” and Percy Sledge’s “Out of Left Field.” Byrnes is exceptional throughout and the backup—especially the horn section and a gospel vocal trio called the Sojourners—is icing on the cake.
